FAQ
When does wind count as a gale?
The page switches into gale mode when ČHMÚ issues a wind warning, when the model shows gusts of 25 m/s (90 km/h) or more in any city we track, or when a ČHMÚ station measures one. Any one of the three is enough.
What is the difference between wind speed and a gust?
Wind speed is an average over several minutes. A gust is the strongest short burst, usually a few seconds long — and gusts are what break trees and lift roofs. That is why the page shows gusts.
Why are mountain gusts stronger than the table shows?
The table takes the maximum over regional and district towns, where people live. Gusts on mountain ridges run considerably stronger — which is why Sněžka or Lysá hora so often top the measured-now list.
Where does the data come from?
Gust forecasts from a model via Open-Meteo, measured gusts from ČHMÚ open data (10-minute professional station data) and warnings from the ČHMÚ SIVS system.
